ノロウイルスは急性胃腸炎の原因の一つとして知られており、季節性は無く体力のない高齢者や乳幼児が感染すると重症化しやすい。感染力が非常に強く、接触感染、飛沫感染あるいは食物を通じて感染（食中毒）するため、病院や老人ホーム、保育所など閉じられた空間内で集団発生するケースが多い。米国疾病対策センター（CDC）によれば、ノロウイルス関連疾患は世界中で年間約7億人にものぼり、そして特に途上国においては、５歳以下の罹患幼児が年間約20万人、またそのうちの5万人が、ノロウイルス感染が原因で亡くなっているとされています。
Norovirus is known as one of the causes of acute gastroenteritis. It not depends on the season, in case if elderly people or infants who have no physical strength are infected, it’s easy to be severe. It shows high infectiousness by contact/droplet infection or through foods; food poisoning, so it causes mass infection in a closed space such as a hospital, a nursing home, or a nursery school. According to US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention(CDC), norovirus-related illnesses amount to 700 million people worldwide each year. Especially in developing countries, about 200,000 children under the age of five are affected, moreover about 50,000 children among them die due to norovirus infections.
ノロウイルスの遺伝子多型については、GI～GVまで5つの遺伝子グループがあり、ヒトに感染するのは主にグループGI，GIIです。その中でも日本ではGIIが８割以上を占めており、特に感染者数の多いのはGII.4です。

Regarding norovirus gene polymorphism, it has 5 gene groups from GⅠ to GⅤ. Among them, mainly group GⅠ and GⅡ infect humans. In Japan, more than 80% of infects are GⅡ, especially GⅡ.4 has the highest number of infected people.
