Our Company …
KAICO Ltd., founded in April 2018, is a startup that began at Kyushu University. Rather than silk, our unique strain of silkworms produce medical-use proteins in high yields and top quality. We can produce those proteins for companies and researchers for use in medicines and vaccines. Our startup builds upon more than a century of silkworm breeding and research conducted at Kyushu University. There are over 450 inbred strains of silkworm in the University and we selected several strains which can efficiently produce hard-to-express proteins. We have unparalleled knowledge of both how to create recombinant proteins, which are of central importance to modern medicine, and also how to rear silkworms. We are confident that our technology will be essential in combating newly emerging viruses.

We make new industries that contribute to people’s health and livelihood by using silkworms.
Our business is also environmentally sustainable, promoting local agriculture through the planting of mulberry trees, upon whose leaves the silkworms feed. Thus, our prospective protein factories would revive sericulture farms in their vicinities. We aim to be carbon negative, while producing medicines at industrial scale. As raising silkworms is easy and does not require large-scale facilities, our technology should also help reduce pharmaceutical production costs.
